Syntax and Prosody in Kashaya Phrasal Accent

چکیده
This paper explores the nature of prosodic phrasing in Kashaya, an endangered language of northern California, as diagnosed by the location of accent. Previous work has reported that iambic feet are constructed across prosodic phrases that can consist of multiple words, but there has been little research into how these pphrases interact with syntactic constituency. We propose an alignment analysis in which the right edge of XP usually corresponds to the end of a p-phrase. But prosodic considerations, in particular an avoidance of phrase-final accent and a preference for a right-branching intonational phrase, can override the alignment of prosodic and syntactic constituency and sometimes leads to mismatches. An examination of a text corpus reveals general pressures against final accent, which can be avoided by accent suppression and leftward retraction as well as the choice of prosodic phrasing. Syllabification across a word boundary also encourages certain groupings in order to satisfy crisp edge-alignment of prosodic categories, showing a further influence of pure prosody rather than alignment with the syntactic edges. Lexical Stress, Phrasal Accent and Prosodic Boundary in the Realization of Domain-Initial Stops in Dutch
This study examines the effects of prosodic boundaries, lexical stress, and phrasal accent on the acoustic realization of stops (/t, d/) in Dutch, with special attention paid to language-specificity in the phonetics-prosody interface. The results obtained from various acoustic measures show systematic phonetic variations in the production of /t d/ as a function of prosodic position, which may b...
متن کاملIncremental Prosody Modelling for Interaction Management in Spoken Dialogue Systems
Prosody, as manifested in accents and phrasal boundaries, is a recognized and important aspect of human language understanding. Accents are supported by syllables, whereas phrasal boundaries occur between words. The influence of both accents and boundaries on the other hand, extends to surrounding syllables and, in the case of boundaries, preceding words (even as far back as the last accent in ...
متن کاملProsodic effects on acoustic cues to stop voicing and place of articulation: Evidence from Radio News speech
This study examines the effects of prosody on the acoustic cues of stop consonants, based on speech from the Boston University Radio News corpus. An investigation of VOT, f0, closure duration, burst amplitude and spectral characteristics provide evidence for a primary effect of accent (a level of phrasal prominence) on these measures as cues to stop voicing and/or place of articulation. There a...
متن کاملThe implementation of phrasal prosody by native and non-native speakers of English: SS ANOVA for multi-syllabic intonation contours
Non-native speakers often have difficulties with prosody; stress and intonation patterns that differ from those of native speakers can contribute to “foreign accent,” even at high proficiency levels. Although effects of a listener’s native language on the perception of prosody are well established, few studies have examined non-native prosody production. In particular, it is not known whether t...
متن کاملThe Role of Syntax in the Nuclear Stress Rule
How directly the operation of phrasal stress placement refers to syntax is theory-dependent: directly in some (e.g., Truckenbrodt 1995, Kahnemuyipour 2009), indirectly in others (e.g., Chomsky & Halle 1968, Halle & Vergnaud 1987). Adequately evaluating this issue requires knowing both the relevant syntactic structure(s) as well as how syntax interacts with phonology – neither is trivial. This p...
